Part Three: Freeing the Python

In the morning about twenty of us set off to free a python that had been found repeated times in a neighboring village’s sugar cane fields. We carried it in a cardboard box to the river, so it could have a drink of water before setting off into the jungle.

After the python was up the tree I asked Manoj why he went through all this hassle for one snake. He said it’s about showing the potential of one positive act. With the villagers helping, it shows a new way of treating these “unpopular” animals- snakes, vultures, etc; respecting and protecting them In the future they will take this approach rather than killing. He said, “This is the moment I live for, to set the wild animal free. This snake is like me, just wants to wander in the wild and go where it pleases.”
